Hurricane Katrina: What's Your Status?

Taken from www.Blacknews.com:

"New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said Monday his city is recovering and that people have been "hoodwinked and bamboozled" into believing it won't be rebuilt."

Were you affected by Katrina? Is the Mayor correct - or is there no sign of relief yet?

During my spring break I was given the opportunity to travel to New Orleans and see the damage that Hurricane Katrina brought. Although many of us are not residents from New Orleans, I believe to some degree we were all affected. In March much had not changed from the clips and footage we all saw almost a year ago. Many people were still missing, water was still contaminated, houses were still in the middle of streets, people were still being found dead, many were still homeless, and some schools were not open yet. But when we talk about relief, we must realize that relief was sent a long time ago. The signs of relief merely came from God. Hurricane Katrina brought devatastaion to thousands a families all over this world, and in the midst of all the strife God sent peace, food, water, shelter, and poured out many of of his blessings unto his people. So yes the relief has come.

I'm a lifelong resident of New Orleans, What you may have witness on TV doesn't do justice for the devatastion my city is still going through. It's the 1 year anniversary, and I'm still displaced. The Federal Goverment still haven't giving help to homeowners as myself. We as a people have to do much of the rebuilding on our own.I'm glade I have a God on myside the has help me cope with the things I've gone and still dealing with. There are areas that still don't have safe drinking water, our schools half are still close, rental property has sky rocketed, the criminal element is there once again, bodies of victims who died in the storm are still being found, and for people who do want to return they can't afford it. Relief comes in may forms, and why God has blessed his people, the city of New Orleans still need relief in the form of recovery money to build the city as a whole.

New Orleans is still in need of help!I am fortunate to be back in my home but I am not happy. After a major storm, we should see our city coming back fresh and new. Instead the streets are still full of trash, we are still using buildings that were already in bad condition, now full of mold and toxins. Canal Street was supposed to be redone and it looks dirty and dingy, the old building that were filled with flood waters are being reused. It is sad. I feel that with such devestation the storm caused that now a year later New Orleans should be atleast halfway sparkling. A year later it should be a place where people come to see how beautiful we have turned the city into from such a horrible event. But it's not. Please Pray for our leaders, ministers, and any one who is in authority over New Orleans for guidance, understanding and compassion. Pray for our school system. Pray for our police to be able to fight against all the crime. Pray for our families who are here and who are relocated, esp. our children. Last Pray for the real recovery of New Orleans!
