Hey QPB members! Here at QPB we've decided to read a book every 4-6 weeks and get together to discuss... our own little reading group. This month, Editor in Chief Gary Jansen chose THE BOOK THIEF. I just finished reading it and absolutely adored every word. It's written from the point of view of Death, taking us through the childhood of a young girl in Nazi Germany. As she learns to read, books become an obsession and an escape for in the madness of Nazi book burnings, bomb shelters and death around her. While her friends are stealing food, she's breaking into a neighbor's house to steal a book to survive.
This is one of the most original books I've read this year, and I can't wait to sit down to dinner and talk about this book with the rest of the QPB team. I will certainly post again here to fill you all in on our discussion.
If you're on this site trying to decide what to buy, I'd definitely recommend The Book Thief. Let us know what you think of it.
The Book Thief was very engaging and haunting. Although it is recommended as a YA book everyone can come away better for having read it. The contrast between the Nazi horors and the gentleness of the father and the Jew was definitely a strength of the book. As a retired librarian I found that the girl's desire to read (even to steal)brought joy to my heart!
Thanks for sharing, Roberta. I also thought that the book is applicable to readers of all ages, not just young adults.
Our QPB dinner to discuss the book is next week... I can't wait to share our thoughts with all of you. I have also recommended it to another reading group I participate in.
The Book Thief is probably the best book I have ever read. I was a little nervous that it would be too "young" for me, but it wasn't. It was heartbreaking yet hopeful at the same time. I LOVE IT!
