Quill Award Nominees

The "People's Choice" of the Book World returns for a second year, in a contest where voting is open to the general public. The Quills official website has the whole list, but here's the stuff of most interest to us grubby SFF types:

Children's Chapter Book/Middle Grade nominees include Jonathan Stroud's Ptolemy's Gate, Cornelia Funke's Inkspell and The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket.

Young Adult/Teen includes Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

General Fiction includes A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore (who won last year in the SF/Fantasy/Horror category for a book jut as "mainstream" or "general" as this one).

Romance includes Undead and Unpopular, the latest in MaryJanice Davidson's "Betsy the Vampire Queen" series.

And the Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror is comprised of:

  • A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon (a time-travel romance published as mainstream)
  • Cell by Stephen King (a SFnal horror story published as mainstream)
  • A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin (a book actually published as fantasy, though the publisher gave this one a very mainstream-friendly cover)
  • Labyrinth by Kate Mosse (a post-Da Vinci Code thriller published as mainstream)
  • The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue (a fantasy novel published as mainstream)

Perhaps it's time to rename that last category "best mainstream book with a fantastic element"? Where is Jo Walton's Farthing? Or The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch? Or Her Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik? Or Glasshouse by Charles Stross?

I'm appalled, but I'm not surprised.

Comments

Well, Farthing wasn't nominated because only books published between August 1, 2005 and June 30, 2006 (11 months??) are eligible. Lynch is eligible (but just barely).

A couple more SFnal nominees: The Narnian under Religion and Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster under Humor.
